LTC Region 1 and Delgado Community College Celebrate New Practical Nursing, Allied Health and Advanced Manufacturing Centers

Louisiana Technical College Region 1 (LTC) and Delgado Community College held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new Advanced Manufacturing, Practical Nursing (PN) and Allied Health Centers of Excellence at the LTC Jefferson Campus on January 31, 2008. The ceremony featured prominent leaders from the business, educational and political landscape of Louisiana.


The featured speakers of the ribbon cutting ceremony included Kim Rugon, LTC Region 1 provost and dean; Dr. Alex Johnson, Delgado chancellor; John Easley, LCTCS state coordinator for career and technical education; Hon. Aaron Broussard, Jefferson Parish president; Ashton Ryan Jr., First NBC chairman and CEO and Delgado Foundation Board chairman; Jack Siekkinen, Louisiana Workforce Commission chairman; Barbara Johnson, GNO, Inc. chief operating officer; Luther Davis, LTC Region 1 coordinator, Centers of Excellence; Woody Oge, Northrop Grumman site director and Delgado Foundation Board member; Michael Martin, Laitram Machine Shop, LLC; Patricia Egers, RN, MS, Delgado Charity School of Nursing provost; Laurie Fontenot, RN, LCTCS program director; and Rebecca Harris-Smith, MSN, RN, BA, interim educational coordinator, Delgado Charity School of Nursing Practical Nursing Program.

The new Advanced Manufacturing Center of Excellence encompasses a 3,200-square-foot laboratory fully equipped with Integrated Systems Technology (IST). IST is an advanced teaching method combining hands-on skills with a strong curriculum for an outstanding learning experience. The center’s complete range of offerings include industry-based certifications, simulated and virtual training, and online multimedia access

The 5,000-plus-square-foot Practical Nursing (PN) and Allied Health Center of Excellence features extensive classroom and laboratory space with state-of-the-art technology and equipment. The center supports LTC Region 1 and Delgado’s Charity School of Nursing as these institutions provide PN and allied health programs to meet healthcare needs in the Greater New Orleans area.

LTC Region 1 Partners With Carpenters Union, Boh Brothers to Provide Construction Training to Help Meet Regional Workforce Needs

LTC Region 1 has partnered with the Carpenters & Piledrivers Local Union and Boh Brothers, New Orleans largest construction company, to provide specialized training to prepare students for entry level jobs in the region’s highway construction industry. 


Students will undergo training for two semesters at the LTC West Jefferson Campus, located at 475 Manhattan Blvd. in Harvey, in the areas of Technical Math, Blueprint Reading, Hand Tools, Power Tools, Introduction to Safety, Professional/Personal Development and Welding.  Students will then proceed to a third semester with the Carpenters & Piledrivers Local Union to learn form building for highway construction.


Students that complete the program will be eligible for entry-level jobs at Boh Brothers focusing on bridge form construction and be prepared for ongoing career opportunities in the high-demand highway construction area.


This training is made possible through grant funding to LTC Region 1 through the U.S. Department of Labor’s Pathways to Construction program.


Operation Comeback & LTC Begin Unique Teaching and Rebuilding Collaboration

On February 1, 2008, Preservation Resource Center’s Operation Comeback and LTC Region 1 held a ribbon cutting ceremony to launch their new affiliation, which is designed to teach students the architectural history of the region and methods of preservation and restoration while they rebuild an historic bungalow in the Holy Cross section of the Lower 9th Ward.


The collaboration was launched at 5204 Burgundy St., one of 28 Katrina-damaged houses in the Holy Cross neighborhood that Operation Comeback is restoring.

Trinity Yacht Training Course Begins

Trinity Yachts will begin training students in Blueprint Reading, Aluminum Welding and Pipefitting for Shipbuilding at the LTC Jefferson Campus in Metairie.

Enrollment in the program is on a referral basis through Trinity Yachts. Those students unable to gain a referral from Trinity will be forwarded to LTC Region 1 for further training. Classes are available at the beginner level or upgrade level for those in need of refresher training. The program will take the average beginner 2-3 semesters to complete, while upgrading courses will last between 1-3 months, depending on the skill level of the student.

Following the training period, Trinity Yachts will hire students who successfully complete their entrance requirements and display formidable skill in their area of practice. 

 

Job Fair for LTC Region 1

LTC Region 1 will hold a Job Fair on April 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Job Fair is the perfect opportunity to meet business contacts and gain an understanding of the employment market.
